We did it! After a long season and two tough 1st and 2nd round matches, the Bruins have earned the right to play Stanford (who beat Pepperdine today 4-0) in Athens on Friday with their own 4-0 victory over Pac-10 foe California. It is indeed exciting; as much as we like to think it’s a “given” that we will play in the Round of 16, Coach Martin will be the first toe tell you that it is definitely NOT. I’ll give you a quick synopsis of what just happened for the Bruins….

Warming up, things looked good, as previously mentioned, I felt like everyone was really ready to go. Unfortunately, at #2 and #3 doubles, we came out extremely flat, falling in an 0-3 hole on both courts. While Nick and Amit were rolling, Matt and Abid were consistently down and Holden and Alex were getting dominated, at one point losing 0-6. Maybe even more frustrating and the most threatening thing of all was not the scoreboard, but the shouts and excitement from the boisterous Cal guys. Despite a great Bruin crowd, their team was fired up and the doubles point looked quite grim. Nick and Amit won, and despite a spirited comeback from Alex and Holden, they lost 8-3. It all came down to Matt and Abid who down 4-6, still had a shot. Matt was serving at 40-15, 4-6 and ultimately gets broken and the Cal guys erupted; the momentum was on their side and it was not pretty. In the game, Cal was serving for the doubles point at 40-30 when Abid ripped a return to deuce the score up, and then they came back to win that game, making it 5-7. After that, it was OUR turn to go wild…with Amit, Nick, and Kallim by my side and the awesome Bruin crowd behind us, Matt and Abid won 5 straight guys to win 9-7 and completely devastate the once-fired-up Cal fans.

Rarely do I ever say this, but, the match was pretty much decided after that. We came smoking, with every guy taking the first sets with relative ease. It was a matter of who was going to win first as ultimately was the first to finish at #3, winning 6-1, 6-0. Next, Abid won 6-3, 6-4 (I think off the top of my hand) before Max clinched a Round of 16 birth at #6 singles.

And there you have it folks, the Bruins advance! In what was a very, very tense and nervewracking start turned into a joyous ending. I am super excited for the chance to play Stanford on Friday…it’s what college tennis is all about!

While the guys get ice-baths and treatments, Grant, Daniel, and I have plenty of packing and prep to do for our trip to Athens. But first, a celebratory dinner with the entire team tonight until it is back to business tomorrow. As always, I’ll keep you updated every chance of the way.

Thanks for the support, WE ARE GOING TO GEORGIA! GO BRUINS!
